Back in the 1980s, the USFL was a league that was successful at challenging the NFL's dominace in the United States. The League gave the NFL a great competition and a great run for the money. It had a growing fan base. People often ask me what killed off the USFL in 1985. The answer, according to sports commentator Keith Jackson, and I agree wholeheartedly, was greed. That was what killed off the league. It was the greed of owners like Donald Trump who wanted to use his team and the league for his own personal gain. Other factors no doubt played a part, but the greed was the main cause of it all.
With the USFL making a comeback, and with the season coming up in 2011, will the new USFL learn from the errors of the old one? For the sake of football, for the sake of success, I certaily hope so. "He who does not learn from history, is doomed to repeat it," goes the saying. I want the new USFL to succeed and give sports fans a great product it can get excited about. If it can do...
